I played the flute throughout grade school and into middle school. I quickly became the First Chair, challenged by a handful of my peers, and soon became the First Chair flutist in the State of California. It was quite the distinction.
Soon thereafter, I had braces put on my teeth and could no longer play. Had the braces on for three years and never picked up my flute after they were taken off.
Sitting here, flute tucked away in my closet over a dozen years later, I can still remember the majority of the notes. Makes me want to check the cork, see if it’s still in tune, and rattle out a string.
