Dear Recent College Graduate,
Are you a young bright accomplished considerate human being who is experiencing career confusion? Don’t go to law school! It might seem like the easy clear parent-pleasing choice right now, but, trust me, it’s a soul-sucking very bad deal!
I have worked for lawyers for 10 years now. Every fall, I meet the new first-years: lovely smart idealistic kids, and then watch as they morph into money-obsessed zombies with huge butts and bad manners.
Think you will go to law school and then pursue some idealistic government or public service related job? Just wait until you are facing $150,000.00 in student loan debt. You will cave.
Think you will work for the man for 15 years and then quit and retire to the Bahamas? I have NEVER seen anyone do this EVER. Guess what? In 15 years you will have been seduced by a million dollar mortgage and will be a slave to your lavishly unsatisfying lifestyle. Your trophy wife/husband and neglected materialistic children will be demanding ipods, cars, vacations, jewelry, private school, horses, you name it! I will pray for you. It is better to be poor and free.
Law firms do not just demand 20 billable hours a day! They demand conformity, moral ambiguity, cruelty, snobbery, and, worst of all: INTENSE UNENDING BOREDOM.
Don’t go to law school!
Best Wishes,
AliceY
