I really would like to lose 130 pounds. My weight was put on over the last three years. In July of 2000, My weight was 161 and I was working on getting to my goal of 140 or less. I fell at work and injuried my hip and back. The pain was horrible! I was getting pain injections and thank God that even though I was in pain all the time. My doctor had me going to physical therapy so that helped keep my weight from going thru the roof. I couldn’t return to work and physical therapy became my life for a year until the worker’s comp insurance approved for my back surgery.I had spinal fusion at the levels of L4-L5-S1. Usually you get fitted for your brace before surgery but the insurance company wanted a company they worked with to do it. So on the day of my surgery they were to make the mold at 6:00 am. I was schedule for surgery at 9:00am. But the person overslept so they did my surgery anyways. The next day a woman arrived to make the cast mold. I wasn’t to be on my stomach at all. My nurse called my surgeon to ask him if this could be done. He said that it could be done but I wasn’t allowed to help roll myself over, that the staff would have to do it. So my nurse told her that when she is ready to do the rollover let her know. The lady finished the casting on the front of my body. And told not my nurse that she was ready but another nurse on the floor. So after about 5 minutes she was getting upset and decided to try and roll me on her own. I was in so much pain she hit my pain meds button and I was dizzy and telling her to stop because she was hurting me not only in my back. But what she didn’t notice was my elbow was stuck in between the rail and the mattress when she had me on my side. She continue to push me over. I felt my shoulder dislocate and I let out a huge scream and tears are pouring out of my eyes. My nurse came running into my room. I was pushing the meds button over and over again but it wasn’t time to give a dose. My nurse open the unit so she could allow me pain meds. X-rays did reveal that I did in fact dislocate my shoulder and they did take x-rays of my back thank God that nothing shifted. I was given something to paralyze me when they reset my shoulder. Then I went to the physical rehab unit at the hospital after being there 5 days. I woke up in the middle of the night unable to breathe and my whole left side of my body was in pain. I had suffered a pulmonary embolism from a blood clot that we didn’t know I had in my leg. Off to the cardic unit I go now. They find the clot and it is not stable it looks like it will break off more so I undergo yet another surgery to place a filter in my vein to stop the clot from going anywhere else. I stayed in the cardic ward for awhile then I had to return to rehab ward to finish up that. So when I first was having surgery my doctor said I would be in the hospital for 4-6 days. After 26 days I was finally going home. Yeah!!!! But the fun doesn’t stop there. I’m too start physical therapy within a week of being released from the hospital, but can’t the workers comp insurance company filed bankruptcy on the same day of my surgery. So until they figure out what is going to happen with the claims I’m too wait. I thought it would be a couple of weeks. Had Surgery in August of 2001 released from hospital Sept.2001. The new company took over in Feb.2002. I was home for 5 months without any therapy for my back. My doctor didn’t want me doing exercises unsupervised and because of the blood thinners I would get dizzy.Started therapy in Feb 2002 things were going good I was losing weight and building muscle. I had to go see the company doctor for a review. His office was downtown so I took the train and because of a derailment earlier that today my train kept changing tracks. I guess it was all my back was going to take. It was mid-rail when I let out a huge scream. They had to call an ambulance I couldn’t move. X-rays revealed that the metal hardware and a screw that was holding it in place had snapped in half in the left side of my spine. That was in July of 2002 and the insurance company fought tooth and nails that they didn’t feel they should pay for the second surgery to remove and repair the damage. I was given very strong pain killers and had to be admitted twice to the hospital for pain management before the insurance finally gave approval so I had my second back surgery in Dec. 2002. Because of the screw moving around the way it did. I have more nerve damage than I did after the first surgery. I’m unable to return to work and because I have always had a job since I was 9 years old. Back when there were paper routes. So it wasn’t long before depression set-in. The weight just kept getting worse and I didn’t care at that time. But now I have too do something about it. I asked my family to get me a membership to the local park district fitness gym and pool for christmas. My current weight is 273 pounds. And as most of you know the heavier you are the more stress it puts on your bones and joints. I want to wish everyone who is trying to lose weight no matter how many pounds. Good Luck and Best Wishes.
