Virginia Tech 20 months ago

The Virginia Tech shootings were especially horrifying to me, because I have been a Hokie at heart since I was a young child. Virginia Tech is part of my community. We had extended coverage since it was in our area. I saw a MySpace video of various scenes of the shooting victims, family, and Virginia Tech students after the shootings. The song was to Avril Lavigne’s “Keep Holding On” and it especially touched me, because I can definitely see how the lyrics can encourage people to support each other, especially after such a horrifying incident.

You’re not alone
Together we stand
I’ll be by your side
You know I’ll take your hand
When it gets cold
And it feels like the end
Theres no place to go you know I wont give in
No I wont give in.

Keep holding on
‘cause you know we’ll make it through, we’ll make it through
Just stay strong
Cause you know I’m here for you, I’m here for you
Theres nothing you can say, nothing you can do
Theres no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on
Cause you know we’ll make it through, we’ll make it through.

So far away I wish you were here
Before it’s too late this could all disappear
Before the doors close, this comes to an end
But with you by my side I will fight and defend I’ll fight and defend yeah yeah.

Keep holding on
‘cause you know we’ll make it through, we’ll make it through
Just stay strong
Cause you know I’m here for you, I’m here for you
Theres nothing you can say, nothing you can do
Theres no other way when it comes to the truth
So keep holding on

Somebody's Hero 21 months ago

Jamie O’Neal’s song “Somebody’s Hero” gives me a lump in my throat every time I hear it. I’m a mom to 3, and they mean the world to me. I can only hope that I mean that much to them.

She’s never pulled anyone from a burning building
She’s never rocked Central Park to a half a million fans, screaming out her name
She’s never hit a shot to win the game
She’s never left her footprints on the moon
She’s never made a solo hot air balloon ride, around the world,
No, she’s just your everyday average girl (but)

She’s somebody’s hero
A hero to her baby with a skinned up knee
A little kiss is all she needs
The keeper of the cheerios
The voice that brings Snow White to life
Bedtime stories every night
And that smile lets her know
She’s somebody’s hero

She didn’t get a check every week like a nine-to fiver
But she’s been a waiter, and a cook and a taxi driver
For twenty years, there at home, until the day her girl was grown
Giving all her love to her was her life’s ambition
But now her baby’s movin’ on, and she’ll soon be missin’ her
But not today, those are tears of joy runnin’ down her face

She’s somebody’s hero
A hero to her daughter in her wedding dress
She gave her wings to leave the nest
It hurts to let her baby go down the aisle she walks right by
Looks back into her mother’s eyes
And that smile lets her know
She’s somebody’s hero

Thirty years have flown right past
Her daughters’ starin’ at all the photographs
Of her mother, and she wishes she could be like that
Oh, but she already is

She’s somebody’s hero
A hero to her mother in a rockin’ chair
She runs a brush through her silver hair
The envy of the nursing home
She drops by every afternoon
Feeds her mama with a spoon
And that smile lets her know
Her mother’s smile lets her know
She’s somebody’s hero

Like the Rain 21 months ago

Clint Black’s “Like the Rain” is another important song to me. This song reminds me of my first love. Even though I’m no longer in that relationship, and haven’t been for years, this song will always remind me of him. No one forgets their first love.

I never liked the rain until I walked through it with you
Every thunder cloud that came was one more I might not get through
On the darkest day there’s always light and now I see it too
But I never liked the rain until I walked through it with you
I hear it falling in the night and filling up my mind
All the heaven’s rivers come to light I see it all unwind
I hear it talking through the trees and on the window pane
When I hear it I just can’t believe I never liked the rain

Like the rain I have fallen for you and I know just why you
Liked the rain always calling for you I’m falling for you now
Just like the rain

When the cloud is rolling over thunder striking me
It’s as bright as lightning and I wonder why I couldn’t see
That it’s always good and when the flood is gone we still remain
Guess I’ve known all along I just belong here with you falling

Like the rain I have fallen for you and I know just why you
Liked the rain always calling for you, I’m falling for you now
Just like the rain I have fallen for you
I’m falling for you now just like the rain

And when the night falls on our better days
And we’re looking to the sky
For the winds to take us high above the plains
I know that we’ll find better ways to look into the eye of the storms that will be calling
Forever we’ll be falling

Song Number One 21 months ago

“I Cross My Heart” by George Strait. First song I danced with my husband to as husband and wife. Very sentimental, because he picked it out, and he’s just not a mushy guy.

Our love is unconditional
We knew it from the start
I can see it in your eyes
You can feel it from my heart
from here on after
Lets stay the way we are right now
And share all the love and laughter
That a lifetime will allow

I cross my heart
And promise to
Give all I’ve got to give
To make all your dreams come true
In all the world
You’ll never find
A love as true as mine

You will always be the miracle
That makes my life complete
And as long as theres still breath in me
I’ll make yours just as sweet
As we look into the future
Its as far as we can see
So lets make each tomorrow
Be the best that it can be

And if along the way we find a day
It starts to storm
You’ve got the promise of my love
To keep you warm
