Hope everyone got out there and voted. It’s nasty over here in Joisey. :)

has a great article this month on the last abortion clinic in South Dakota.
A couple years ago, the Canton, Ohio school board voted to remove their sex-ed curriculum and institute an “abstinence only” policy.
The result?
Last year 13% of the female student population became pregnant. 65 girls.
The abstinence only policy has been removed. The board has now decided to include safe-sex ed in the curriculum.
Kudos for coming to their senses, but meanwhile what’s going to happen to the 65 girls? Will they be encouraged to stay in school? Is there a support system set up for them? I’d really like to know.
I include sex ed and birth control posts under this goal because sadly they’re related. You would think that an anti-abortionist would want to do everything to reduce abortions. Instead, I’m noticing a trend in a “sex is only for making babies” policy and desire to get rid of everything. Which of course, worsens the situation.
I seriously feel there’s some type of insidious war on women. I can’t understand it.
There was this disturbing article in the NY Times about the government’s coming campaign to promote breast feeding.
Now, I’m all about the breast feeding. I did it. But that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone.
But these people are equating not breast feeding as being the same as, let’s say, smoking during pregnancy.
What?
It’s a campaign basically saying that if you don’t breast feed, you are a bad mother and you are irrevocably harming your child.
Does this mean that they will make it mandatory for companies to have lactation rooms on site? Of course not. Come March, I’ll be pumping in the bathroom stall. Will I be getting reasonable paid maternity leave? Nope. Will breast feeding in public be considered not a taboo? Yeah, right. They want you to do it, they just don’t want to see it.
And what about women who can’t breast feed? My poor sister in law who tried, and found out that she had a serious deficiency in her milk. She went on formula TO MAKE HER CHILD HEALTHIER. Is she a failure? Is she a bad mother?
What IS this? Is there anything about a woman that the gov. doesn’t want to control? And why is a woman, Dr. Suzanne Haynes, promoting this warped all-or-nothing campaign?
I don’t know if anyone else has read the article “Pro-Life Nation” from the NY Times magazine, but it was the most frightening thing I’ve ever read. It’s about El Salvador, where abortion in any circumstance is considered a felony- so women who have them and doctors who provide them go to jail. Great article.
