I’m happy to stay home and curl up with my computer or book. I’ve never been social or out going. My parents still tell me about when I was younger, and how I’d go off on my own and read whatever magazine or book was lying around.
I don’t like groups or meeting new people. The only time I can stand being in a crowd is when I’m at a concert. I avoid the mall and stores before holidays so I won’t have to be around so many people.
However, I’ve made one good step in the right direction. I took up a new hobby: I play Go. I started learning through a one time program at the local library and liked it so much that I took a chance and went to the weekly meetup the next day. I’ve only missed one week (and I couldn’t help that). I don’t know a single person there and I’m terrible at remembering names, but they are the sweetest bunch of guys and are understanding of my bad memory. I had been learning sewing from a woman I met through craigslist (another HUGE leap, because I had to meet with her alone in her home and I’m terrible with one on one interaction) and she became a good friend through that…
So…I guess the moral of the story is…if my ass can do it, so can you. It just takes small steps sometimes.
