from the National Wildlife Federation a couple of months ago. I meet their basic requirements for providing food, water, cover, and places to raise young. I’ve also rid my property of most non-native invasive plants and replaced them with native plants. I use NO pesticides or chemicals. I leave dead and dying trees standing and leaf litter on the ground. With my son’s help, we built a woodpile especially for wildlife and I also have a couple of brush piles.
I am so well-rewarded for these efforts by the birds and other critters that make my yard their home. Today we counted 10 species of birds at the feeders, on the ground, and in the trees. Butterflies, frogs, toads, snakes, and chipmunks also inhabit my yard. Not much else makes me feel as good as seeing the thriving life in my yard.
