Why not learn to speak Chinese? 20 months ago

I want to read and write Chinese as it’s one of the main world languages and likely to become even more important over the next decade. I think learning to speak Chinese will be too hard though as there isn’t a Chinese community nearby so I’ll stick to the printed word, for now at least.
