Success for me in the realm of an artform like capoeira has never been about being “the best” or becoming a killer (as Julian likes to say). Sure the ascension process is gratifying and being recognized by your teacher and fellow players is an electrifying experience, but ultimately I would like to be remembered for my individuality and character. I would like to be remembered as the kid who had his ups and downs, but that always stepped into the circle with an honest heart, and appreciation for what I was taking part in.
The roda is the one place where I can freely discard all my pretentions and dellusions, and look myself in the eye…
