This is our second year of "nontraditional" yule...

One of the gifts I gave my daughter was a coupon book of things to do together. I’ve resolved to play more games and do more projects with her, but the follow through isn’t always great. (example I’m sprawled on the couch with a book, engrossed in it, I don’t want to stop to play mancala).
The coupon book is a little contract saying “yes I’ll put down my book and engage you. I’ll even make a mess on the kitchen table I don’t really want to clean up”
My daughter is only 8 and when I gave her the coupon book she was kind of WTH, but once she read it. She got very happy and excited. And then we played Pirate Life.

Well this year we changed how we did the holidays

I celebrated with her during the week leading up to solstice. I gave her small gifts or treats throughout the week leading up to solstice. Then we stayed up all night for the eclipse (won’t be able to have an eclipse next holiday!). I let her go with her grands for traditional christmas & my mother got to have her consumer driven gift frenzy. My stress level was waaaaaay down. I think the little girl and I had more memorable experiences & no anticlimactic Christmas day let down.
