Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

“This thing we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.” We all have things that don’t go quite the way we expect and we’ve all had the rug pulled out from under us but when we get back up and keep going we show our true courage and character. Life won’t always go our way – if it did, we’d miss out on chances to learn and grow. Each time we’re faced with an obstacle, a roadblock or a detour, it’s just pointing us in a new direction, quite possibly, a better one. Being open to the road ahead, with its ups and downs, is what ultimately makes our lives a success. ♥

Our ‘passion’ in life is our compass and our vehicle – it guides us and drives us. Some of us are lucky to have found our purpose for living and others continue to search but to truly live a fulfilling life, we must find what our inner self yearns to do. Finding our passion can take some experimenting, some soul searching and sometimes finding out what we DON’T like but being passionate about what we do and how we live makes every day an adventure and infuses us with light and energy. It’s unique to each of us and truly why we’re all here. ♥

Life seems to play favorites but if we choose to see life as a comparison we’re creating lack. Life is actually abundant and we all can have amazing lives if we choose to acknowledge our gifts and stop comparing what we have to others. If we lived on an island with no outside communication we’d revel in the morning sun and the nature surrounding us. We’d feel like our lives were magical. Abundance isn’t about having more, it’s about appreciating all the amazing things we have. When we accept that, we all become the favored. How great is that? :)

The moment we decide we want to live the best life we possibly can is the moment we start living our best life. Making the intention and believing we deserve it is the first step. The ‘best’ of life isn’t necessarily wealth, fame or a life of leisure. Each of us has our own definition of what will fulfill us regardless of what society deems as successful. Defining our dreams and taking steps toward them takes a little work but once we start, magic will begin to happen and we’ll experience the bliss of dreams coming true. ♥

We’ve all experienced disappointment but what if when things go ‘south’ it’s because we’re supposed to change our direction? Roadblocks and dead-ends are indicators of finding a new path which, many times, will take us to places we never expected. Staying open to change and remembering that we’ve changed course before in our lives and survived (and hopefully thrived!) helps make ‘disappointment’ a word that we replace with ‘opportunity.’

Whenever we face a situation that seems insurmountable because of it’s sheer size or weight, we need to remember that everything big can be broken down into smaller components. No matter how huge something ‘seems’ if we choose to see it in smaller portions, we can find a way to manage around it. Our minds can alter proportions, quell fears and invent outcomes so there’s nothing so big that we can’t conquer when we set our minds to it. It really works! ♥

On our roads we encounter many creatures, some of whom are benevolent, generous and kind; others who are cruel and hurtful. Once we’re grown, it’s up to us to protect ourselves so we need to stay alert when we meet someone new. Our instincts can guide us and if we listen, will usually send us a warning bell (or ten!) if we need to be careful. If someone is worthy of our trust, we’ll know by their honesty, kindness and unfaltering integrity. If we want others to trust us, we need to offer the same. ♥

Grow and Change

Many times in our lives we get to a point where we no longer believe something we once felt completely sure about. Changing our minds because of things we’ve learned, experienced or witnessed is a healthy sign of wisdom and maturity. Because all of our paths are different, we all don’t come to the same conclusions at the same time and sometimes we will never match viewpoints with someone else; yet, just as we need to follow our own path, we need to allow others to follow theirs. The freedom to grow and change should belong to all of us. ♥

Time for a change

Even though sometimes we know it’s time for a change, change can be scary. What we know can sometimes become appealing again simply because of the safety of knowing what it is vs. not knowing what change will bring. Yet we have to remember that we face changes on a daily basis and if we resist change, it may find us anyway. If our heart, gut and mind are telling us that it’s time to make a shift in our lives then we should follow our instincts. The first step is always the most difficult but once we take it, we’re on our way to a new life. ♥

Passion is infectious. When we have passion for something, the energy we show can spark passion in others. Staying passionate and curious about life can make a dreary day into a fun adventure. It takes effort but it gives back in multiple ways. While we’re here, there are numerous ways to make the best of our experience. Expressing sincere interest in others and listening to what they have to say sparks conversation and friendships, and trying new things, learning and participating in life will enrich our minds and souls. Passion offers the potential for greatness when we nurture the passion in us. ♥
