learn to play piano

I have not been on this site for a few years. I just started revisiting some of my goals, and remembered 43 Things.

I am happy to say that in December, I wrote my Advanced Music Theory exam (through the Royal Conservatory of Music) and scored a 97 percent.

I made the decision last year to work toward my Grade 1 piano credentials. I made the decision because I think that it is a good way of measuring what I have accomplished so far and I would like the certificate as a recognition of my accomplishment.

I am preparing to take my RCM Grade 1 Piano (practical) exam on June 27. While I do not anticipate getting anywhere near the score I received on my written theory, I do anticipate that I will pass.

I may do one more update here, once I have my exam results. However, for all intents and purposes, I am considering this goal complete.

It has been quite some time since I have been on here to do any updates. I have still not met my goal of playing “Yesterday” (turned out to be a bit more difficult than I expected). However, I am progressing well on “Lady Madonna”. I am also learning “Imagine” which is an extreme struggle, but I am not giving up on it.

Overall, I am progressing, and can actually play some not so simple tunes. I am definitely going to keep working at this goal.

I have made good progress on this goal. As of next Tuesday, I will have completed 20 one-hour lessons. I intend to continue the lessons next fall, but aim to keep practicing all summer, as my goal is to be able to play “Yesterday” by the end of September. So far, I can manage about 25% of the right hand portion of this piece. I am not proceeding any further with the right hand until I also master 25% of the left hand. My biggest problem is that I still struggle with reading bass clef.

I had the last of my first set of 10 lessons last night. We are just starting to learn chords and I will be continuing with a second set of 10 lessons, starting next Tuesday.

I have made it through eight lessons (with two more to go at this level). Our recital is on March 9. Thankfully, we get to perform as a group, with no soloes required!

I will continue with the second level of lessons this spring.

Well, I had my first lesson last night. We are not reading notes yet, but I did learn to play a segment of “Amazing Grace” (by numbers).

I received a piano for Christmas. I am starting piano lessons this week.

My goal is to be able to play “Yesterday” by September.
