Russia  — 7 months ago

I’m not sure that learning Russian will do me any good since nobody here speaks it. I guess I just keep thinking about the future & wondering where I’ll end up… I know that the world is big & I find it amazing that there are places out there where they’d say I was speaking gibberish!

When I feel hopeless it makes me feel happy to know that at the very least learning a language will make the future more uncertain…I want to think the sky’s the limit! I don’t want to think that I can only do so much-never-do I want to limit myself!

sit! My tongue has gone dry.  — 8 months ago

I’ve just had something of a go at Russian numbers & at the end of many of them is this st sound only more of sssstauh. It feels really odd making that ending sound like I’m somehow squishing the tip of my tongue against the back of my top teeth and also managing to press the air out of my mouth like a snakes hiss.

It is interesting all the sounds that I could probably make if only I knew how. I’ve heard that people can learn to howl like wolves, hoot like owls, and… I find that amazing. I don’t know if I’ll ever land myself in Russia but knowing the basics of it shouldn’t kill me. Although I must remember to keep up my Spanish studies considering how long it took me to get where I am with it. I have a one track mind sometimes (Study Russian…Spanish gathers dust…not a good idea!)

I remember...  — 11 months ago

When I was eight years old I was watching the Disney movie Anastasia and I learned my first Russian word. DAHs-vee-dahn-yah: Goodbye.

Writing: my handwriting *uh-oh*  — 11 months ago

The Russian alphabet is written differently than it is typed on the computer just as how my written English does not look typed. I wonder how I am supposed to write my name… Well seeing as I can’t print out all my Russian notes I’m looking at how to form Russian letters as they do and not as typed letters.

I’ve found a site for this:

I hope this will help me & you as well! :)

Russian...Just might prove to be scary.  — 11 months ago

I’ve looked into the Russian Language via a dvd and at the beginning I thought hey this looks promising if not extremely easy. I know how to say what my name is (min-YAH zah-VOOT *insert name here) and several greetings, followed by the sad phrase “I don’t speak Russian”. I’ve been trying to learn the alphabet but I cannot for the life of me pronounce three of the letters as they are rolling the r or making this guttural noise somewhere in them. I’m learning the alphabet from this audio site so I know how it’s supposed to sound.
English is my first language,
Spanish is my second,
and neither of them sound
anything like Russian.

I still intend to try but... ahhh...
how on earth do I make those sounds?
