Long story short: I have diffuse coronary artery disease and take a variety of meds including one for blood pressure which brings it down to about 100-110/60-70. Unfortuately sex is like trying to fight a fire without enought water pressure. Ergo, ED (Erectile Dysfunction) in a man who was quite sexually active when it struck: I was about 55, I’m now 58 and still have a “naughty” mind and a wife who loves to share it.
So, what to do? I saw my friendly neighborhood urologist (withough divulging where I live, in my neighborhood that means a world-class urologist) who first recommended a product called MUSE, which is a urethral suppository using the drug alprostadil which “is identical to a substance that occurs naturally in the penis and aids in achieving an erection.”
Skipping over it’s administration, “MUSE works for only about 30% of men who try it,” and “Sometimes provides only a partial erection.” Moreover, some of the side effects that I experienced were: a throbbing penis and irritation. I never got to see if it interfered with romantic spontaneity—althoughj I can’t see how it wouldn’t because the man must treat himself just prior to sex, and then wait for an erection. It lasted 4 hours and then petered (excuse the pun) out. Besides all that there’s the cost: like a Lay’s (excuse this pun also, or not) potato chip you just can’t buy one. They come in a box of six and if I remember correctly was about $300. You just can’t try one. And, Insurance companies won’t pay for it (no surprise there).
The next step: Injection therapy.
