November’s right around the corner, and that means time for can-a-thons my friends; but this time I want to put a spin on the usual concept to make it more appealing to prospective (and unsuspecting) donors. Any tips…? What makes things easier for you? If I don’t make things really convenient for my tenants, I’ll get no participation and that would not make for a very happy Thanksgiving at all.

Every year, the company I work for organizes a campaign benefiting United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. I always participate with small donations here and there, like buying raffle tickets or “Jean Fridays”... However, I had never actually pledged a monthly amount to be deducted from my paycheck, which is one of the options.
This time around, I decided to give it a try (per my last entry posted here). It was kind of scary to see how much money it all adds up to over the months and it felt like a big commitment, but I pressed “submit” anyways, and come tax season, it’ll be deductible! :)
Not quite edibles, but same concept… This month I organized a school supply drive benefiting Hillside (Atlanta’s oldest social service agency) at the buildings where I work at, with a population of 1500+ tenants.
After 2 weeks of collecting donations, I’m ashamed to say that we only received enough school supplies to fill a very small box. I feel quite heartbroken to find out that it is true: we are all more generous around the holidays and it’s so hard to realize that the need is there all year long.
So, starting this year I’m never making a donation during the holidays again. Making a monthly donation to a worthy cause feels much more reasonable to me, and much more honest than a big yearly gesture.
