Taming of the Shrew 1 month ago

Our friend, Jordan Engle, performed in Taming of the Shrew in Santa Monica. He did a great job. I made sure to let him know how PROUD I was of him. He is an excellent actor and I am proud of his ability to captivate an audience.

Hallie and Jordan worked together in the Tropicana Orange Juice “Squeeze” Campaign. He has been very kind to my family!

Wes Denaham 15 months ago

A Brownsville man was killed when a car hit his bicycle on August 13.

Edmonson County Sheriff’s Deputy Ricky Sanders says the call came in at about 8:45 yesterday morning.

39-year-old Wes Denham was riding his bike on Highway 259 about a mile-and-a-half south of Brownsville when he was hit from behind by a car.

Denham was a State Farm Insurance agent who often rode his bike to work in downtown Brownsville.

Wes and I went to elementary school-college together. His daughters attended the school that I taught at in Kentucky, so I saw him or his wife dropping off his girls and at school functions. I know he knew that I valued him and our friendship. It is hard to understand why this happened. Everyone loved Wes. He was an easy going, friendly person to everyone.

Matthew 3 years ago

Since Matthew has been away, I have been to visit him twice. Anyway this is a picture of him as a little gangly kid with his mom.

Matthew and my brother were best friends. My brother died in 2004. I feel like I still have a connection to my brother through Matthew.

Matthew 3 years ago

This is Matthew in the 80’s in case the haircut didn’t date the picture! Matthew and I were sweethearts in high school. We kept in touch after I went to college. He always came to visit me and wrote etc. I love him very much. He is alive. He is taking college courses and making good grades. He has had a very, very hard life and has made some bad choices.

Bill Sanchez 3 years ago

Bill Sanchez…I met Bill when I was 18 years old living in Havelock, North Carolina. I was married to a young US Marine and worked in a Handy Mart convenience store. Bill worked for Bosch Power Tools, still does, and he would stop in and buy coffee and cigarettes everyday (He does not smoke anymore). We started talking and became very good friends.

Bill is a photographer, artist, model builder, father, husband, athlete, wonderful person in general. This man has been my rock. I talk to him about everything under the sun. I have not lived in NC since 1993. We are still best friends in the world. I have been to visit him and he has been to visit me in KY.

I am a heavy sleeper. Bill calls me EVERY morning to wake me up at 5AM! We usually talk 1-2 times a day if not more.

Bill has a daughter “Little Alicia” she is now married to a US Marine and living in Japan. He has a son Ivan, who lives in Japan as well. They were little kids when we met. It is weird that they are adults now. Bill’s wife, Alice, has tolerated me over the years. I think we get on her nerves with our silly stuff that we used to do. :) She is not jealous at all.

Bill and I took a trip to Virgina to Busch Gardens when I lived there. We rode roller coasters and carried on like we were in 3rd grade.

He is crazy, dependable, a good listener, serious, funny, etc. I feel very fortunate to be friends with this man. He is the bomb.

Literature: Alumna’s book featuring Big Red debuts today

Big Red is the star of the sidelines at Western athletic games. Now the furry red mascot will be the main character of a new line of children’s books.

A Western alumna has started a company to create and sell a line of children’s books and products featuring Big Red.

Julie Hannah-Allen’s first book, two holiday cards and two bookmarks are debuting at 4:30 p.m. today in the Hall of Champions at Diddle Arena.

The Big Red Spirit merchandise will be available tomorrow at the University Bookstore, Werner-Lowe, Barnes & Noble in Bowling Green and bigredspirit.com.

The first book, “Go Team!,” deals with teamwork and helping friends. The book introduces four children as Big Red’s friends.

President Gary Ransdell helped create Big Red 26 years ago. He said he liked that Big Red has a national persona.

“These books take Big Red into a new dimension,” he said.

Ransdell said he liked Big Red’s high moral values in the books. He said he’s looking forward to adding the book to his “unofficial, informal Big Red Hall of Fame” in his office.

“I look forward to seeing future books and who knows, maybe movies and a Saturday morning cartoon show,” he said.

Hannah-Allen started working on her company, SPIRIT, LCC, a year and a half ago. It had been her dream for 15 years to write children’s books, Hannah-Allen said.

Her 3-year-old twin sons, Joshua and Jacob, inspired her to write her new books because of their excitement when they were around Big Red, she said.

Hannah-Allen said she likes Big Red because he doesn’t have a race, gender or socioeconomic status.

“You can make Big Red anything you want Big Red to be,” she said.

Hannah-Allen’s next book will be for the alumni office’s Legacy Program. The program is for children of alumni who receive Western-themed gifts until they’re 18.

Western is finalizing a partnership with SPIRIT, LLC for the book, a birthday card, a growth chart, the logo for the Legacy Program and car decal, said Ginny Hensley, the associate director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving.

Hensley said she likes the partnership because of ties Hannah-Allen and her business partner, Tim Earnhart, have to Western.

“They love Western; they want to see us grow,” Hensley said.

Hannah-Allen graduated in 1993 with a degree in corporate and organizational communications. She was a Spirit Master for two years and a member of Kappa Delta sorority and the Student Government Association.
