In training for the big event... 2 years ago

A good friend pointed out to me that ‘The Little Prince’ is a fairly difficult book. She recommended that I should train up towards this goal by reading something that I only need to look up a few words in each sentence rather than every other word. That way I’ll enjoy it more and my reading will improve much faster. To this end I started reading a translation of ‘The Lion, The Which and The Wardrobe’ or ‘Le Lion, La Sorcière Blanche et L’Armoire Magique’.
Now this crazy hectic 5 months has concuded I can begin to focus on languages again. French to begin with — and my journey’s home will be full of C.S.Lewis magic.

Once upon a time... 4 years ago

many moons ago, when I was just a girl at school, my nose burried constantly in books; I fell in love.

Not uncommon for a teenager.

However this infatuation was with the likes of Satre and Baudalaire. I hungered to read them in the original text. I poured over twin language versions of the poetry I loved and the prose I delighted in and although I understood very little of the French (or Italian – I had a thing about the Divine Comedy too) my laguage grades went through the roof as I began to see a light at the end of the tunnel of the mindless repeated phrases about platform numbers and pens belonging to my aunt.

One of the many effects of being bullied at school is that I gave up on those dreams.

Recently when HarroldChasen announced that he wanted to learn French I said I’d go along for the ride. I really want to support him in all of his dreams and goals and this seemed the best way. But the more I think about it – this is something I’m long overdue to learn.

‘French for Dummies’ and ‘The Little Prince’ is my starting point. But I hope in the future to rekindle that love affair.
