After having enjoyed very much watching Whisper of the Heart the previous week I decided to watch another anime by Studio Ghibli today.
And again, while very different, this was very enjoyable. They’re so good at capturing subtle moods.
Funnily enough again I have a little back story on this: When it first came out in ‘93 I was asked if I could translate the title. And since there was kanji involved I was very proud to have come up with “I Can Hear the Ocean” for “Umi ga Kikoeru”. I see it’s now translated as “I Can Hear the Sea” or even “Ocean Waves”.
But finally having seen it now I still like my title better <g>.

Bear with me as I try to explain the chain of events that led me to watch this movie, but I find it funny :)
- I was reminded of a certain summer vacation several years ago
- I remembered having read Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women on that vacation and having liked it a lot
- Now the reason I brought this book in the first place is because talking about it with a friend some months before that, I found out I already knew the story
- Turns out I had seen Little Women in an anime version long before I knew it was based on a book
- Yesterday I was on Wikipedia looking at these things and saw that the character designer that did that, Yoshifumi Kondō, also did Whisper of the Heart
Easy ! lol
So I’ve just finished watching it and it is a very beautiful movie.
I forget how heartwarming these can be. Good stuff.

And I enjoyed it. The original series is now almost 13 years old, but especially the designs of the “angels” withstand the test of time and stand out from pretty much everything else in the genre.

to go and see Evangelion 1.01, which will only be shown for three days. This should be fun, it’s seldom enough that anime is shown on the big screen.

this on hold for now, because I really want to use that time to watch the Battlestar Galactica series. I’ll come back to this – hmm, too bad there’s no “postpone goal” ability on 43…

I didn’t find enough time to keep watching the series I had started. The last few weeks I somehow always ran out of a day and was glad if I found enough time to read my book at least.

This is the series I’ve decided to watch next. I had actually seen its first episode a couple of months back, right after it came out. Now that the whole series is available, I’ve come back to it and rewatched #1 yesterday.
This is very very laid back, with very slow pacing. It’s about a girl and her sketchbook. In this first episode we see her, sometimes alone and sometimes with friends from her art class, walking around to find something interesting to draw, be it a cat or a bug or even a soup.
So, I’m sure some (many ?) people would wonder why I would watch a show where “nothing happens”. Well, it’s very charming, nostalgic even, and puts me in a dreamy state <g>. I like these unusual, fun, slice-of-life stories.

And so I watched the final two episodes of this series today. I must say, I found it very enjoyable :)
What’s funny is that what first drew my attention to it, was simply its title “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” was very intriguing to me. Only later had I read all the praise about it.
Now, to choose, what to see next…
P.S.: A few scenes I saw made me yearn for summer very much.
