The great experiment will start in August.
For the past 4 years I have been independently wealthy. I define that as meaning that I do not need to work, but rather can live off of returns from my investments—AND still growth my net worth significantly.
Granted for the past 3 years I have been living in the 3rd world as a Peace Corps volunteer. (with a $300 / mo stipend)
But in these years, I have built wealth to the extent that my returns are now more than my salary was when I worked at that big software company.
The catch is that NOW, things have changed … I have a wife who I must support. Her income prospects are not high. I am not counting on any income from her.
The other catch is that I just put part of my money into real estate (a townhome). I bought a rather inexpensive but lovely property.
Real estate, in my mind, is NOT an investment. Firstly because a primary domicile does not produce income and secondly because the rate of appreciation is inconsequential to me compared to my other investments.
Starting in August (after settling on the condo) we’ll see if I can be “independently wealthy” (ie, live off investment returns).
Either way, I DO want to DO something productive, so I will train up for a MT real estate agent license, then start learning about the real estate dev biz.
