This was more important to me back before I started to let school and work get in the way. That’s how it is about many of my goals, I lose sight of them in day-to-day life. Especially when there are new pressures and I’m tiredly wishing I was in a different situation.
My idea has long been to sample western culture, to read not only the Great Books of literature, but also the classics of science and philosophy. To consider them as much as possible, on their own without leading commentary.
I’ve kept a musty set of the Great Books I found in storage that my parents had bought, but in my last move I finally left the dirty things in the dumpster. Most of the books should be available though, from Gutenberg E-texts and other editions. I also keep hoping to run into a deal on a new set at the used book store… when I have the money.
I once tried to set up a web bulletin-board for the purpose but never attracted much interest. Today, I have to wonder how many of the titles that others might want to read would I be able to keep up with.
