Last year, I joined Danny Wallace’s Karma Army which meant I was to do a random act of kindness every Friday.
I started doing RAOKs for strangers. Things like pay for the next persons lottery ticket, leave change in a payphone, leave 20p next to publict toilets you need to pay for, I sent my college lecturer new chalk anonymously, I sent postcards to strangers telling them to be happy, I bought a book of stamps and stuck them to the postbox telling someone to send something nice, I bought an extra Sunday paper and anonymously posted it through someone’s door, and once I even bought a woman a cookie and asked a (very rude) waitress to take it over to her…while I ran away and hid in embarrassment.
But once my money ran out, I found it really hard to find things to do that were free. The free things usually include having to do things face-to-face which I’m too anxious to do! But I really do miss this, for the selfish reason that it made me feel happier and I swear I had better karma when I was adhering to the Good Friday Agreement.
I want to get back into doing this.
