Our new church gets together just before Thanksgiving every year with a few others for a joint Sunday night service, and people from each sing in the choir. Our area is unfortunately still very segregated, and this is a great way to blend the “black” and “white” congregations. There are 2 Saturday afternoon rehearsals to learn the music beforehand, and hubby and I went to the first one last weekend. I used to be a soprano, but can’t hit the really high notes gracefully any more, so I spent my first time as an alto on Saturday. Learning to usually sing harmony rather than melody will take some adjustment!

at the baseball game I had a Vodka Sno Cone – perfect! It was lime Smirnoff, and just what I needed after the Monday From Hell.
This is taking some getting used to. I’ve truly never lived alone, believe it or not. At first it was a bit exciting, though not the circumstances I would have liked – now I’m not sure how I feel about it. But I still think it’s what I need to do right now.
I’m renting the house of a friend, which is good for both her and me. It’s been on the market well over a year, and since it’s been vacant so long it needs some extra care – which I’ve been giving it. The many hours I’ve spent these past 6 days cleaning and doing yard work has really been great therapy, and it’s a joy to see things looking better (though they weren’t really that bad when I moved in).
but over the weekend when looking through a magazine I saw a free sample offer for which you could text your request – which I did, since texting is included in my outrageously, obscenely expensive (and soon-to-be-ditched) phone plan.
was the first time I successfully baked a great yeast bread! Thanks to the wonderful LL, who posted this link the other day. My daughters loved it, and the first loaf has already disappeared. Thanks, LL!
Saturday night I went to my first-ever Trivia Night, which was a fundraiser for Boss Man’s Rotary Club (he bought the table for the 8 of us). It was fun! This one was a fairly casual event held at the local Moose Lodge (only in the midwest!) and for which I made a couple of hor d’oevres to share. This allowed me to test one of the new recipes I want to bring for Boss Man’s upcoming party, so I know how I want to tweak it the next time around.
Though our team started in 3rd place, we kept slipping as the night progressed. I still think one of their answers was wrong!
It appears an upcoming Something New may be going to Milwaukee for a couple of days of Summerfest this July! I just found out we get July 3 as a holiday. :)
While in CA a couple of weeks ago, I bought a papaya for the first time, at Trader Joe’s. My granddaughter’s name is Kaiya, which rhymes with papaya, and I’ve called her Kaiya Papaya since she was a baby. She recently asked why I called her that – so I decided she needed to try a papaya. Though she thought it was OK and ate some of it, her little brother went nuts over it!
The first time I had a papaya was in Kauai; Ono’s Family Cafe serves a half papaya with their breakfasts. :)
