Here

is the ring. Now all I need is the time to take it to be looked at.

I have always

loved this ring, both because I just like the design and because of the story of its history. It really has no monetary value, but has a lot of sentimental value for me.

It is a very old ring, which was originally an engagement ring. My Grandma Douglas’ cousins (or aunts, I’ll have to ask my Mom) fell in love with men who, like them, were interested in becoming missionaries in Africa. Their men both popped the question at about the same time, and the plan was to have a double wedding, followed by the 4 of them going to serve together in Africa. For some reason, the parents had a problem with the fiance of one of the girls, and would not allow her to marry him. (this is the part of the story I’ve never understood. If it were me, I would have ignored them and eloped, if necessary. But I guess it was a different era …)
The other couple did marry and as a child I remember seeing letters from them with exotic stamps and interesting stories from Cameroon. The girl with the broken engagement (and heart) gave her ring to my grandmother, since her guy would not take it back. It was then passed down to my mother, who wore it occasionally, and several years ago one of the emeralds worked loose and was lost. When Mom sold her house, she passed it on to me, and I took it to a jeweler to repair, but he explained to me why this would be difficult, if not impossible, but promised to try. He had it for several months and never did anything with it, so I went and picked it up, but haven’t done anything with it since then.

It’s a very thin yellow gold band with three emeralds in the middle and 3 tiny seed pearls both above and below.

We have a client who has a jewelery store that specializes in custom design; I should take it in to him for consultation and a quote.
