So what IS a real hero?

My favourite books are fantasy novels. Here, being a hero is pretty much straight forward. The hero is put in a very difficult circumstance and needs to move on to do the ‘right thing’ (which is usually fairly clear to him or her, if hard) by the end of the book.
Well, I would like to be a hero by the end of my life. I would also like to “Make a difference” but how? I am involved in Environmental protest and try to protect animals and habitats, but that does not really seem heroic to me.
