Today is the 4th of July. I have beautiful squash plants growing, and some decent lettuce seeing as how it’s hot here. I have a few good herbs, BUT I have creatures who are eating all of the tomatoes. I decided yesterday that if they want them, they can have them. I planted more flowers and nurtured what is still “mine”. This garden is better than the last one, which is the goal, but sharing all of the food was not part of the plan. Still the joy comes from planting and working in the dirt, so I guess we’re all winning.

It’s June now. I have a good garden growing. There are tomatoes on the vines, and since I’ve never gotten fruit before July 4th weekend, so I’m setting my sights on mid-July. The squashes I planted look the best of anything. Lettuces are coming up, but it gets so hot some days that I don’t think they’ll do well. I planted nasturtium seeds and they are coming up. It’s going well. I admit I like instant gratification, so this is taking a bit of patience on my part, but I’m remembering to water, and things are looking semi-healthy!
I’m right around the corner from turning over the ground this year and starting greens. I’m ready to start and do it right this time. We’ve always gotten food from our garden, but it would be so nice to get most of our food that way. I’m not kidding myself that it’ll happen this year, but just to get closer would be so fulfilling. Time to research the things we love that we’ve never tried to grow.
It’s going to be 100 degrees today, so I gave the tomatoes and leeks a good healthy soaking this morning. So far the only red tomato I’ve seen was eaten by our wild rabbits. Cute, but not what I’d intended. The peas earlier were super as were the onions!
This seemed like a lofty goal. It still kind of does, but it was pointed out to me that we harvested peas and onions early in the season and I have vines full of green tomatoes and leeks that are almost ready to be pulled up. I have felt like I wasn’t achieving this because so many things didn’t make it. Lost sight of the ones that did!
