The tomatoes are out of control! Hope they start to ripen soon. Starting to get some patty pans growing. I may be able to pick a cuke today. The hubby has been harvesting hot peppers for weeks now.

The horseradish has taken and is sporting new leaves! I wonder how I can harvest that? I’ll have to investigate.

Garden 2011

is off to a great start! Everything is flourishing and I’m keeping bad bugs & weeds at bay.

Tomatoes, potatoes, 6 varieties of hot peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, patty pan, peter pan (Which I guess is the cousin of patty) herbs, lettuce and radishes…. I think that’s it.

A friend just sent me some horseradish. Whoo!

cool weather planting

I’m hoping to start some plants for the cool autumn season. Spinach, lettuce, green beans? Are green beans a cool weather plant?

Cucumber beetles

I have them. They’re really very pretty, but don’t let that fool you. They wreak havoc on your garden.

I’m using/trying DE Earth to get rid of them. We’ll see if that works. I really hate to lose these plants, they’ve been great producers.

Went on vacation

came home to find 9 huge cukes in the garden, 3 ripe tomatoes and tons of cherry tomatoes.

I even had a house sitter here who was caring for the garden as well. She had picked more cukes earlier in the week.

Tons of hot peppers. I need to start canning them.

We’ve had a rainy summer so far. But the past week has been hot & dry. I may need to drag the hose out.

July 7th

Picked 6 cukes today. It’s a jungle out there.

June 21st

The tomato plants are doing incredible! I’m not so sure about the cabbage plants. I think the slugs may have won. The tomatoes may be shielding them from the sun now. They’re towering over them.

We’ve been harvesting hot peppers one at a time. Hubby loves freshly picked with his dinner.

I’ve planted 2 green bean seeds. They’ve sprouted. I may stick 2 more in the ground in the next few days. Stagger them.

Cucumbers are like bushes. All the rain we’ve gotten has done them well.

Here comes more rain now!

Beer

slugs love beer. both garden and 2 legged ones as well. ;O)

I captured a few in little traps filled with old beer I found in the basement. Then it rained and flooded my little traps.

Now I’ll save egg shells. I’ve heard that the little varmints don’t like crawlings over broken eggshells.

Growing!

Everything is doing great! Except the cabbage that the slugs are devouring. I must do something about that!

We have 1 tomato on an “early girl” plant already. Quite a few hot peppers on multiple plants. The cukes are doing well too. We’ve gotten quite a bit of rain here. I’m glad too. I detest hauling the hose out to the back of the yard then reeling it back in!

I still have 2 zucchini’s to plant!! Must get busy.

It's in

planted last night. 7 different tomatoes, 8 hot peppers, 2 sweet, 2 cucumbers, eggplant, 2 cabbages – the 2 squash have to wait until I find a home for them.

Our soil is near perfect after the Farm Bureau tested it. I’m not messing around this year. We’re no farm – but urban farmers. I want lots of veggies to share and can this year.
