Defiance, Ohio - Anxious and Worrying 16 months ago

Anxious and worrying
So you spend your whole life hurrying
For something better
Than what you knew before
And always knowing you are you
And you are going to even up the score
Is that what you’re always fighting for?

And it’s a long way back
To a place once called home you left behind
And it’s a long night out with nothing much to say
And it’s the things you hold in sight
That you will dream less of each night
Until you guess it never mattered anyway

Cos we’ve all got hearts
And they keep beating
And they keep telling us what we should say
It’s hard to listen anyway
But these days we are in tune
With the way we love the afternoon
As it fades slowly to a restful night

Everything is magic until it becomes routine
In your bedroom, on the road
Or in the corners of your dreams
And I sure hope we aren’t just spinning our wheels
Whatever happens, I think you should know that
I’m just glad it feels like anything at all

So don’t push me down
I don’t go down easy
And don’t pick me up
Just to see me be the boy you know
It’s just the distance between we
And who we wish that we could be
Don’t seem so far, I guess, as it did so long ago

Defiance, Ohio - I Don't Want Solidarity If It Means Holding Hands With You 17 months ago

let’s stop this talk of privilege because the songs that we sing are as much a product of our privilege as the clothes on my back and the phone call i made to my mom last night. let’s stop this talk of action because action comes easy it’s the moments just before that are hard, when i’ve got to get my voice and my fist on the same page as my heart. let’s stop this talk of them because the things we find deplorable in politicians, CEOs and cops are the same things that will tear ourselves apart. and let’s stop this talk of words because words like ‘dishonesty’, selfishness’ and ‘laziness’ and ‘greed’ aren’t as distant to us as we’d like to believe.

so please, the next time you’re smashing the state, don’t go breaking my heart. because i know that when we pick up the pieces, the only thing left will be the same empty rubble that’s made up every revolution that i’ve ever known, to make me believe and lose faith in humanity in the same empty breath of hot air.

and they say that the beauty’s in the streets but when i look around, it seems more like defeat. i’m afraid that this fight that we’re all caught up in will make us the same as that which we oppose.

so please, the next time you’re smashing the state, don’t go breaking my heart. but i know that we can pick up the pieces and build something new, something different that’s not like every revolution that i’ve ever known, that can make me believe and have faith in humanity and we’ll all breathe a breath of fresh air.

Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister 18 months ago

Anthony walked to his death
Because he thought he’d never feel this way again
If he goes back to the house then things would go from bad to worse
What could he do?
He wants to remember things exactly as he left them on that funny day
And if there is something else beyond, he isn’t scared because
It’s bound to be less boring than today
It’s bound to be less boring than tomorrow

Hilary walked to her death
Because she couldn’t think of anything to say
Everybody thought that she was boring, so they never listened anyway
Nobody was really saying anything of interest, she fell asleep
She was into S&M and bible studies
Not everyone’s cup of tea, she would admit to me
Her cup of tea, she would admit to no one
Her cup of tea, she would admit to me
Oh, but her cup of tea, she would admit to no one

Hilary went to the Catholic Church
Because she wanted information
The vicar, or whatever, took her to one side and gave her confirmation
Saint Theresa’s calling her, the church up on the hill is looking lovely
But it didn’t interest, the only thing she wants to know is
How and why and when and where to go
How and why and when and where to follow
How and why and when and where to go
How and why and when and where to follow

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see a minister
He’ll try in vain to take away
The pain of being a hopeless unbeliever

When she got back, her spirituality was thrown into confusion
So she got a special deal on renting
From the man at Rediffusion
“Look at me! I’m on TV!
It makes up for the shortcomings of being poor
Now I’m in a million pieces, picked up for deliberation
By the people listening at home
By the people watching on the telly
By the people listening at home
By the people watching on the telly”

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see a minister
Chances are you’ll probably feel better
If you stayed and played with yourself

Patrick Wolf - Augustine 19 months ago

As the bell tower blocks the summer light
All the seeds in our garden fight
To break and blossom, all to be adored
And look, your skirt is torn
And there’s blood on our sheets
As comes the long arm of the law
Fist tight, banging on the door
And knocking me down on its way in

As I pass out into a dream
Of whooping cranes and wooden beams
Great white wings beating
In an attic, in a house, in the dead of night
Singing

Oh, my Augustine, Augustine
Oh, is this forever, ever?
Oh, oh
Sweet Augustine, Augustine
What does this mean for us?

Does it mean that I can never change my ways?
And that’s why, love, you shouldn’t stay
Still you will and love me
Like a mother or a maid bringing you down, down
Down on your brazen knees
Watering the worms and the weeds
Thinking, why does love leave me so damn cold?
Now I’m getting old
And is this what it should be?
Well, is it?

Oh, my Augustine, Augustine.
Oh, is this forever, ever?
Oh, oh
Sweet Augustine, Augustine
Or do we kill this one tonight?

And now come the tears, heavy and hot
As it comes clear, this is all we got
As I hold you to my bed
Like a cancer, or a curse
Now be my loving nurse
As we fall back into the impossible dream

Neutral Milk Hotel - Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone 19 months ago

There are beads that wrap around your knees
That crackle into the dark
Like a walk in the park, like a hole in your head
Like the feeling you get when you realize you’re dead
This time we ride rollercoasters into the ocean
We feel no emotion as we spiral down to the world
And I guess it’s worth your time
Because there’s some lives you live
And some you leave behind
It gets hard to explain
The gardenhead knows my name

Leave me alone, for you know this isn’t the first time
In fact, this is twice in a row
That the angels have slipped through our landslide
And filled up our garden with snow
And I don’t wish to taste of your insides
Or to call out your name through my phone
For the glory boys at your bedside will love you
As long as you’re something to own

Follow me through a city of frost-covered angels
I swear I have nothing to prove
I just want to dance in your tangles
To give me some reason to move
But to take on the world at all angles
Requires a strength I can’t use
So I’ll meet you up high in your anger
Of all that is hoping and waiting for you

The Libertines - Up the Bracket 20 months ago

Saw two shadow men on the Vallance Road
Said they’d pay me for your address
Oh I was so bold

I said you see these two cold fingers
These crooked fingers I show
You a way to mean no

Well they didn’t like that much I can tell you
Said sunshine I wouldn’t wanna be in your shoes
And they chased me up three flights of stairs
Caught me in the lift how I sighed and said
Hello, but you’re impossible

But it’s just like he’s in another world
Doesn’t see the danger on show
He’ll wind up like Joseph, bloody in the hole

And it’s just like she’s in another world
How they suit each other oh no
But you never get close
It’s impossible

Saw the same two men on the Cally Road
Said now they’d double their offer I was so bold
To say you see these two cold fingers
These crooked fingers I show
You as a way to mean no

But it’s just like he’s in another world
Doesn’t see the danger on show
He’ll end up like Joseph, bloody in the hole

It’s just like she’s in another world
How they suit each other oh no
Oh you never get close
Unstoppable

Fuck off!

But it’s just like we’re all in another world
How they suit each other oh no
But you never get close
Thats close enough

Kimya Dawson - Velvet Rabbit 20 months ago

The cuckoo in your clock had a heart attack
The droop in your stock turned your market black
If walls could talk they’d say I don’t want to shack up
Like the water I want to keep running

A lawyer with leprosy stole your umbrella
Reached over your shoulder and took your fromunda cheese
You didn’t even notice it makes me wonder
If you even know what goes on in your home

This isn’t a come on so come on let’s face it
The come on your face is really just mayonnaise
It was on your sandwich but then you misplaced it
Now you’re going to hell man pun-tastic!

Where Aleister Crowley milks cows in the dairy
And the cows are the dowry for the dead girls he marries
Tariffs are tallied when bovines are buried
The farmer in the dell is the devil

I wore prosthetic pants to the homecoming dance
And my homeboy leroy had legs made of bok choy
I ate him while we danced, loaned him my pants
Romance is romantic if you’ve got the answers

Velvet rabbit lives in a bubble
Everyone’s scared about germs getting shared
And nobody knows how soft you are

Velvet rabbit lives in a bubble
Everyone’s scared about germs getting shared
And nobody knows how soft you are

The cuckoo in your clock had a heart attack
The droop in your stock turned your market black
If walls could talk they’d say I don’t want to shack up
Like the water I want to keep running
Like the water I want to keep running
Like the water I want to keep running

The Jam - That's Entertainment 21 months ago

A police car and a screaming siren
A pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
A baby wailing and stray dog howling
The screech of brakes and lamplights blinking
That’s entertainment

A smash of glass and the rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls
That’s entertainment

Days of speed and slow time Mondays
Pissing down with rain on a boring Wednesday
Watching the news and not eating your tea
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls
That’s entertainment

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard
Watching the telly and thinking about your holidays
That’s entertainment

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
A hot summer’s day and sticky black tarmac
Feeding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away
That’s entertainment

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude
Getting a cab and travelling on buses
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs
That’s entertainment

Morrissey - Alsatian Cousin 21 months ago

Were you and he lovers?
And would you say so if you were?
On a forecourt
On a Friday
Passing my way
Oh…

Were you and he lovers?
And if you were then say that you were
On a groundsheet
Under canvas
With your tent-flap
Open wide

A note upon his desk
“P.S. Bring me home and have me”
Leather elbows on a tweed coat
Oh, is that the best you can do?
So came his reply:
“But on the desk is where I want you!”
So I ask (even though I know):
Were you and he lovers?

Outrageous sexual innuendo and bitterness – two of my favourite things.

Arcade Fire - Cars and Telephones 22 months ago

I read the pages about me
In her autobiography
They were brief and to the point
Our flesh while you are getting dressed
A memory that needs to be repressed
I’ll just wait until it’s over

Since you’ve gone away
I never know just what to say
Since you’ve gone away
I never know just what to say

Cause I like cars more than telephones
Your voice in my ear makes me feel so alone
Tonight I’m going to drive
The silver moon is shining bright
Over the interstate
God saying, “Hurry, don’t be late”
Soon the sun will rise
That’s when the romance dies
And I’m just tired of running around

I walked to get the mail today
I guess your letter never came
I’ll just check again tomorrow

Our flesh while you are getting dressed
A memory that needs to be repressed
I’ll just wait without saying a word

Since you’ve gone away
I never know just what to say
Since you’ve gone away
I never know just what to say

Cause I like cars more than telephones
Your voice in my head makes me feel so alone
Tonight I’m going to drive
The silver moon is shining bright
Over the interstate
God saying, “Hurry, don’t be late”
Soon the sun will rise
That’s when the romance dies
And I’m just tired of running around

But fuck it, I love you no less
I’m going to feel like shit
By the time I get to you
Now the sky is turning blue
The stars, they disappear
One by one with daylight, dear
And yes, you’re in my head
But that doesn’t make you here

And I’ve lost all my friends
But you’re the one I miss the most
And now I’m almost there
Yeah, I’m almost to the coast
And if I had any notion
Of how I’m gonna drive my car across the Atlantic Ocean
I’d be fucking set
