I really should think about replacing my car, but I still can’t afford to have a hybrid unfortunately, so this is going to remain a long term goal…

At the moment a hybrid car is well out of my price range at about £16,000 (~ €23,680 / $28,300), given that I bought my current car for £2,600 on my credit card (part exchanging my previous car for the other half of the value of the car).
However, I feel strongly that I need to find a way to reduce my environmental impact. Once I have my own house again, I’d like to find a not too expensive way to meet at least part of my energy needs through renewable resources, ideally in a self sufficent manner, e.g. solar panels.
There used to be a grant available to people buying hybrid cars in the UK, but that is no longer available…
