has never looked worse. Our row of arborvitae, planted some four years ago and thriving back in June, are dying now. We’ve tried watering them, but with a new heat wave moving in, it’s looking hopeless now. The hoses need to be moved to a couple of feet from our home’s foundation, so it doesn’t crack and break next to our expansive, baking clay-based soil.
Dead or probably soon dead:
Annabelle hydrangeas
Black-eyed susans
milkweed
Joe Pie weed
Shasta daisies
Red twig dogwood shrub
Flowering dogwood tree (trying mightily to save this one)
coneflowers
list goes on
All our annuals except for these wonderful bright orange cosmos, which are volunteers actually.

What was the best year and what was the worst year in your life thus far? What made them the best/worst?

How do you motivate yourself to do things that you ought to do but clearly don’t want to do? Do deadlines help? self-criticism? rewarding yourself for finishing, does that help you?

what the heck. This is according to Joel’s father in the 1984 film Risky Business. Will you describe a time when you said or thought, what the heck (or a variation on this) and indicate whether it worked out well or not?
