Every town or village here has an agricultural summer show and apart from lifestock, etc., there always is a tent with cookery, flowers and crafts too.
I missed the entry deadline this year and was too busy anyway, but I’ve wanted to do this since we took on the allotment and so went with a friend this year to check it out.
I saw the most incredible chickens, some as big as a large turkey!
Anyway, the competition tent was hilarious, there were a large number of categories: 5 Gooseberries, three sticks of rhubarb, that kind of thing. I can easily enter stuff from the allotment like that.
Than there were preserves and cakes, of which I make loads anyway, the weird thing was, that the chutneys and jams were all in uniform jars, so clearly intended for competition and in many cases with them and the cakes it looked as if they had not been tasted prior to judging!! I found that a bit disturbing, how can you judge them if you don’t taste them? Unfortunately the cake categories are also very boring, just the usual sponges and fruitcakes, not very imaginative.
So for my personal taste not much competition, but I’m probably not traditional enough for the judges, we’ll see next year.
It was a fun morning with my friend and her little son and a nice man sharpened M.s old seize for me. We bought little containers with lids for kitchen compost and entered a recycling competition by the council and both won a large composting bin, how cool is that?
