I had a 1999 Pontiac Firebord that cost me $3000 in repairs on top the $400 loan payments the last six months I had it. The engine blew one week before I lost my job, and 3 weeks after a doctor asked me to sign a waiver indicating they recommend I don’t drive. This was in September 2004. Here it is July 2006 and I haven’t had a car since, or a regular job.
I’ve been taking the bus around Detroit and this isn’t a very good mass transit town.
I cover nightlife in photos and the last bus from Detroit to the suburbs where I live runs at 1:30am. Our clubs close at 2am – I loose 30 at least 30 minutes of coverage on Friday nights, provided I’m left to the bus.
Saturdays it is worse the last bus from Detroit out is at midnight. If I stay downtown the morning bus runs at 6am on Saturday and 7am on Sunday… so I have to find something to do until the bus starts up again.
Thankfully I know a lot of great people here and can sometimes get a ride home.
It looks like I may need to get a car at some point simply to cover events through photography better. Until then I take the bus, deal with delays and transfers to get where I need to go. The suburb buses have a 2 bike rack. But the city buses have none.
