Now we're cooking

As part of our prepping for the baby’s arrival, we’ve made a commitment to start eating better. With that in mind, we picked a few recipes, did a major shop, and have since made:

- “Tomato Macaroni Casserole” (which was totally delicious)
- “Cauliflower Bake” (Which we ate tonight)

We’ve also been breakfasting better – I made scrambled eggs and french toast last week, and they were alright, though I have to work a LOT more on my French toast.

Cooking Class

Well, our first cooking class was a blast. The teacher is an EXTREME “P” (in the Myers-Briggs sense), and as we were changing the quantities in the recipes, most of the class was everyone in it going up to her so she could modify the amounts on the fly. Still, I think we learned a great deal, and definitely had some delicious food. Aimée got pretty sick the day after, but I didn’t at all… I’ll be curious to see how everyone else in the class was.

We made a Dahl Curry, and next week we’ll be buying her recipe book, as well as a bunch of ingredients. I look forward to trying this one at home, once we get a blender. My favourite of the dishes we tried was the Dahl Potato curry, which was nice and spicy., with a rich blend of flavours.

If only my mouth weren’t still sore from Saturday’s Kung-Fu self-punch-to-the-face, I’d be able to enjoy eating that much more.

Among other things, I’m psyched to be able to start knowing EVERYTHING that I’m eating – not wondering what the assorted ingredients mean and are in there fore, but knowing why I put each thing in, and being able to track their exact values on dailyplate.

Next Week – Aloo Gobi

Weekly attempts helps

Two of my friends who are also wanting to work on their cooking have now started coming to my place on Thursday nights. We make a meal, then eat it while watching Six Feet Under. So far, I don’t feel like I’ve actually learned all that much, but it’s a step in the right direction.

I guess this week it should be my turn to pick something to cook!

Not that Grilled cheese is bad...

But if I’m going to start eating better, I need to learn how to cook!

This is really a subset of a different one of my goals (Change my Eating Habits), but an important enough subset it deserves its own goal. Both for myself and for others I’d love to be able to make delicious, healthy food in a variety of forms.

Milestone:
  • Come up with a list of 10 things to make.
  • Practice making them all until I can do it well.
