We just got back from Sweden and we were lucky enough to catch a sighting of the Northern Lights! We were in Sweden for four nights, two of which we stayed at the Ice Hotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi which is above the Arctic Circle.
The first couple of days were very overcast, but things cleared up by the third night, when we went on a snowmobile excursion into the Lappland wilderness in search of the lights. Luck was with us, and at about 10pm we saw an amazing showing. It was too cold (between -40 and -50) and we weren’t out long enough to really get any pictures, but it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
The next night the lights never came out, so we really were fortunate to see them when we did. Lappland is a stunningly beautiful place. I hope to return one day, but maybe when it is a tad bit warmer. :)
