I’ve been placing a horrendous amount of pressure on myself and I suddenly realized the other day that yes, I will eventually have to pay another 75 quid to renew my provisional—but I do not own a car, cannot afford to buy a car, cannot afford the petrol to drive a car, and cannot even afford to park a damn car so really this is a deadline I can push way way back and give myself some breathing room.

Also, technically, I left the country in February, so that gives me until next february that if I HAD to drive I could do so under my US license.

The goal stays on my list, though.

have started carrying the code book with me, loaded the software onto my laptop (again) and have emailed my friend for the name of their driving instructor. Because I’ve been driving for over 20 years, I wasn’t going to use the instructor except for one or two confirmation lessons to make sure I was doing ok on this side of the car/road. But I’ve realized that I am going to need some practice time in an actually automobile, of which I do not own one. I wonder how many hours they’ll say I need before I’m ‘ready’?

where does the time go? 19 months ago

time, I need more time! I keep putting this task off and now September is fast approaching and I really REALLY don’t want to pay to renew my provisional, I’d rather sit for the damn test. Maybe I need some subliminal motivation:

Countdown 21 months ago

okay, I’ve been putting this one on the backburner for over a year now and the time has come to make this a priority. My sisters are going to visit in July and while I could probably get away with renting a car and using my US license, for the cost of a rental I could just buy myself a perfectly decent used car for which a UK licence is necessary.

I’m gonna enter this goal onto my Gold Star Chart.

Code Change 2 years ago

I’m so close to getting this goal and then they announced the other day the release of a new Highway Code. Futhermucker! I can’t believe they are calling it the “2007” when it is nearly the end of the year. Could they not wait until January 1st and make it the 2008 edition?

"L" 3 years ago

I received my provisional license in the post today, complete with my picture and barely readable signature next to a giant red L. Woot!

I'm doing it 3 years ago

today I am truly taking in my application for a provisional license.

I had the opportunity to drive while in Ireland last week and I must say that I miss it much more than I realized. I’ll be driving again in two weeks while I visit the States (right side, RIGHT side)which will just reinforce my decision to get a car here. Oi.

I received the UK Learning to Drive and Theory Test software in the mail, and jayzus do I feel like a kid again. Except a whole lot wiser (and just a tad more bitter). I have been driving for almost 21 years, but the UK does not accept a US license exchange, most likely attributable to the fact that these countries drive on the opposite sides of the road. I have to apply for my provisional license (learners permit) and any time I am driving I have to display a giant red ‘L’ on my car.

Except I don’t have a car.

I’d like to say the L is for Love, even though we know its for Learner and yet its REALLY for loser. At the age of 37 if I have to display a large scarlet letter, it should damn well be an ‘A’!
