We don’t really do Halloween and Santa…but I was worried that there weren’t enough “family traditions” that we could get psyched about on a regular basis. By a fluke, I brought my daughter and I matching pj’s a few Christmas’ ago. I dressed my hubby and the boys in the same colors. I told a long, embellished story, about the magic of being one as we go to sleep on Christmas Eve – but that we would break the magic if any one in the magic pj’s got out of bed. So someone is reading this and saying that crazy (a.k.a. me) could have just stuck to Santa – but we wanted to focus on something different. The results have been priceless.
Where else in our society can 5 people dress alike, create a plan for our joint going to sleep and waking up, and plan yearly around being one in the midst of holiday madness? We’ve coupled this experience with the magical fairy dust of the tooth fairy and many more holiday wonders – like going to the zoo to see the holiday lights in freezing weather. We aren’t out door people, but every year since my husband and I were dating – we started braving the cold to take in the beauty of what is around us. After all, half the fun is creating the tradition – the other half is carrying out and documenting the experience each year.
