Viikate (“scythe”) is a Finnish rock band and while it’s not exactly a new band for me, I only started seriously listening to them a couple of months ago, because I really like their latest album. The previous albums have been ok as well, but I’ve never really gotten into them until now. The newest album simply gets better and better with each listen.

This one’s a not-so-well-known progressive rock band from my home city. I’d never heard of them before I saw their gig last Wednesday and I was very positively surprised. The music was quite psychedelic and complicated but still easy to listen to. It was also funny in a weird way, because I simply couldn’t stop smiling while listening to the band.
The best thing is that they will play another concert at a local music pub in a couple of weeks. :-)
I saw them live last week having heard only short samples of their material beforehand. They played an energetic gig, which somehow remotely reminded me of the Exodus gig that I saw in Germany. The music was kind of old-school thrash metal, which is always nice but they could try to add more variation to the songs. Not bad, but lacks that little something which would make them stand out.
The latest album by Isis (Wavering Radiant) received very positive comments in a Finnish music magazine and I wanted to check it out months ago, but somehow I never got around to listening it. Until now, that is.
The music is progressive, atmospheric, melancholic, heavy and complicated. The songs are long and the album demands lots of attention, and I haven’t listened to it enough to form my final opinion. It sounds very promising, though, and the feelings I get from the music go very well together with these long, dark autumn evenings.
This one was recommended to me by a friend of mine, who has a very similar taste in music with me. It’s pretty hard to describe the music but it is some kind of heavy rock or metal with clean vocals. The singer has an interesting voice and the music is actually pretty good.
ChthoniC is a Taiwanese metal band. I saw the review of their latest album in a Finnish magazine and the comments were mostly positive, so I wanted to check the band out because so far I haven’t discovered any Asian metal bands that I really like. Luckily the album (Mirror of Retribution) is available on Spotify.
I really liked this album and I definitely have to listen to it a couple of times more. There is enough complexity to keep things interesting and even though the music is very hard and heavy there are still some very nice melodies. I especially liked the vocals because there are different styles of screaming, growling and shouting and even some female backing vocals as well.
It’s a Canadian thrash metal band. So far I’ve mostly listened to the album ‘Schizo Deluxe’ which is very good but I’m definitely going to check out some others as well.
This one was mentioned in a magazine that I read today. The album Jukebox was described as a mixture of country, blues, soul and jazz, which sounded very interesting to me. I checked out the album and it turned out to be mellow and nice summer music.
Artillery is a Danish trash metal band. I read a very positive review of their latest album on a Finnish heavy metal website and decided to check the band out. I found their previous album (B.A.C.K.) on Spotify and I like it quite a bit. Reminds me of Exodus, Testament and some other old-school trash metal bands. I hope the newest album will also be available on Spotify in the future.
I’m listening to this band right now on Spotify and I have to say I like it a lot. The style is progressive rock and the atmosphere is quite melancholic. Reminds me of Anathema in some ways.
