It is always the simple things that can be the most important. I read on a couple of web sites and in a book I have on Garage Band that “locking” a track will greatly lighten the load on the CPU. Another tip was to record with no effects and then play with effects after recording (also to lighten the load on that poor CPU). Just tried this and the quality of the little riffs I was trying to record increased as delays, hiss and the occasional pop disappeared, unlike my previous tries… Now to start building on that knowledge to generate a workable piece of music.

I just started playing around with Garage Band (I have the iLife ‘08 version) and this is something I want to learn really well. Don’t need to be a guru or power user, but I also don’t want to be limited by a casual knowledge of the software as I begin to think about recording some songs, riffs, diddies or the occasional epic masterpiece.
