Finished Deuteronomy a few days ago, and now I’m taking on Joshua. This is the book where the story of the prostitute who helps two spies from Israel is told… I had a hazy memory of that biblical story, and didn’t have a clue where in the Bible it was told. Now I know.
Speaking of Luke… I have noticed that every time Jesus performed a miracle he dispatched the healed by telling them “Don’t tell anyone about these things”. However, when he heals the man possessed by demons who was shackled with chains in the cemetery (“el endemoniado gadareno”; I’m reading the Bible in Spanish, so I don’t know how that translates in English) he tells him: “Go and tell everybody of the things God has done in your life today”. I have been thinking about that over and over in the last few days…

I finished reading the gospel according to Mark a couple of nights ago, so I am ready now to start reading the gospel according to Luke.

You know you have established a new habit when suddenly you can’t engage in it and you miss it. That’s what happened with my Bible reading while my son was in the hospital for five nights. I stayed with him around the clock, and didn’t leave the hospital in all that time. That first night I felt a very strong need to read the Bible for two reasons: because it is already an established habit and because of the situation I was in. I needed the extra comfort.

Two nights ago I finished the Gospel of Matthew, and now I’m starting the gospel of Mark. Right away I can tell the differences in both books… the details each writer decided to emphasize are very different one from the other… Of course, that only enriches the reading.

More than once already I have read from the Bible and been affected to tears! This had not happened to me before. I used to read only with my head; now I’m also reading with my heart…

What I’m doing is reading one chapter from the Old Testament (from the Pentateuch and Historic books), another chapter from the poetic books, and a chapter from the New Testament, almost every night. So far I have read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Job, Proverbs. Right now I’m in Numbers, Psalms and Matthew.
