Let me give you some details so you can visualize my town. So it’s a small town about halfway between Memphis and Nashville. The population is around 7000 half of which are still in high school and elementary. The most exciting place in my town is Wal-Mart!..no joke. We have a small bowling alley that no one goes to, a one cinema theater that plays movies that have already been out for like a month..and they’re usually PG but sometimes they’ll throw a PG-13 in there. We also have a park. It has a little playground, a pool, a “skate park”, a tennis court, and of course the little league baseball fields. That’s all the excitement of my little town. We have little shops all around that sell this and that but nothing really great. We have one big car lot..well it’s big compared to all the small used car lots.. We have a more car washes and gas stations than anything else, which I think is ridiculous. I don’t really think we have any elementary schools that are within city limits, they’re all still in the same county they’re just way out there..does that really make sense? We have one high school and a community college. Actually the community college is kinda like a fake community college.. It’s not even the main campus. It’s really just a smaller center that offers a few classes so we don’t have to drive as much, since the main campus is 30 to 40 minutes away. Yea..small town life..it’s great!!
yea right
There is nothing for me here. There is nothing to offer. Most of the jobs are factories and fast food. My grandmama and I were talking about this earlier. I brought up how there are no good paying jobs here. She brought up my cousin who works in a factory, “Well Joseph does pretty good. He’s making about $12.50 an hour.” Really, wow..that’s nothing. And that’s at a factory. He’s doing what she calls “good” in one of the very few jobs here..and it’s a damn factory. You could probably be a nurse at our hospital but no one really wants to work there. They don’t even deliver babies there anymore, you have to go to the next town. They pretty much give you a band aid and some Tylenol.
And the majority of the people here is white. If there was, by some odd chance an open opportunity like some nice job that pays half way decent, most likely a white person would get this job. And you also have to know people. It’s a small town, a lot of people are related. Why is it that most of the better off families are usually related? Hmm..what a big coincidence, I bet there were no strings attached.
People here are so closed minded. You have to be a certain way, a lot of people here are more or less the same. If I were to graduate college with a masters degree in just about anything and stay here in this little bitty town, I would have wasted 6 years of my life.
That’s why I want to move away. I know I don’t belong here. I’ve been feeling like that since I graduated high school. I just need to finish my prerequisites at this fake little community college so I can transfer somewhere else. Out of state tuition is crazy but who knows where I’ll go or what will happen..
Where ever it is..I’m gettin the hell up outta here!!
