Right now, working on scales on the guitar, and playing the melodies of my favourite songs by ear (aiming to be able to play any melody on first listening/imagining), and in different keys. This is long-term work – happy to let it build slowly. :)

the thing I’m working on most right now is not looking at the keys when I’m playing. It’s the only way to make real progress, but I was in a really frustrating rut with it for a long while. Now I seem to have made a mental breakthrough – I need to be able to see the keys in my mind, and the only way to do that is to be strict about not looking down and feeling my way around with the black keys (and hopefully, my ears) as my guide. So I’m starting to make progress on this front. I imagine when I manage to do this, I’ll start aiming for the same thing on the guitar – and any other instrument I want to play well.
and it was good – extremely basic room sure (reflected in the price), but privacy, fresh air, and most importantly – PIANO. Not the greatest piano in the world – many of the keys in the lowest octaves don’t work, so I have to avoid them – but any fairly-in-tune, functioning acoustic piano is better than a keyboard. I’ve booked to go back next week, and having this gives me hope. It’s also a good cheap place for practising if I find people to play with :)
by my own music skills – especially in playing. I’ve spent so much time on it, but it seems to develop so slowly. I don’t think I’m learning/practising/thinking about it the right way.
Maybe I’ll learn faster when I find people to play with? Until then, I’m trying to build a daily routine of practising – half an hour or forty-five minutes a day, consistently every day.
I also found a cheap rehearsal room with a piano, and booked an hour next friday to see if it’d make a better environment to practise. No sound-proofing though – so can’t record. But at least it’s cheap.
