The name is “croft.” Many of these were dug into the sides of hills, and then covered up with sod, so that all that stuck out of the hill were the chimneys. Poorer folks lived in them. They were around a long time before Tolkein. You can still see some of them in parts of Scotland.
The main difference between the historical ones, and Tolkein’s were the windows and the doors. The real ones did not have round doors.
