In “The Headmaster Ritual”, Antrim explores themes of relationships; between man & woman, father and son, friends and acquaintances, as well as between mentor and mentee are interwoven in the backdrop of a private school in the Northeast. The story focuses on a new teacher and the son of the headmaster as they go through a school year. Both Model UN and an a real diplomatic rife between the US and Korea are very interestingly and quite realistically featured as the source of the culminating events. I very much enjoyed the vivid and poignant details of descriptions scenes and environs.
Having been involved with Model UN activities for over 20, I was quite skeptical about how he would incorporate them. But I have to (reluctantly) admit that I have actually done or know of similar occurrences around Model UN conferences… although they are extremely rare.
I escorted student sot a Model UN in Mexico during the Elian Gonzalez diplomatic row between the US and Cuba over. during this experience the conference organizers brought student participants from Cuba and my students from the US and created a panel to discuss the issue before the simulated Security Council. To this day it is one of the most innovated integrations of real life and Model UN I have ever participated in.
As a novel is suppose to do, The Headmaster Ritual entertains and over exaggerates some elements of teachers, students and Model UN, but also points out some of the real life difficulties of model vs. real life scenarios.
I would definitely recommend this as a good read and as and interesting first inclusion of Model UN in a major novel to all teachers and older (e.g. college) students of Model UN.

“Steppin’ on the Blues: The Visible Rhythms of African-American Dance”
I started with the last chapter. I read that chapter first because it covers “Stepping” so you know I had to read that first!. I then read the Introduction and will read it from Chapter 1 on in the traditional method.
I gotta do what I gotta do to keep me highly motivated and on course to finish 25 books by the end of Summer.

This is a short book which I finished in one sitting, but I will read at east 2 more times this summer.
It is an inspirational book…I know this type of book works for some people and not for others. Well they help me…they help me remember the best techniques for success and focus.

Interesting book, but too slow and mundane for me with little to know philosophical challenges or ideas.
Sorry H. doerr but i would not recommend to most people.

Wow. This book is excellent. It also spoke to me. I found many similarities between the lead character and my own experience (post divorce). I also discovered a philosophy of life that I had already learn to put into practice. The metaphysical elements and journey of self discovery also remind me of the Celestine Prophecy.
I have to say that Paolo Coelho is oen of my favorite authors now! I evern joined his “Warriors of the Light” fan club/e-mial lsit serve!
I will read “The Alchemist” as soon as I can.

OK, I’m going got cheat a little bit. I am starting in the Spring…not just the Summer!
The first I am in the middle of now and I am loving it. It was suggested by a good friend who says she sees a lot of me in the main character…and she is correct.
“The Zahir” by Paolo Coelho is #1!
