watch the classics

This is one of the reasons I signed up for Netflix. I love how you can have a list of all the movies you want to watch right there and how it recommends movies to you. There are so many old classics that I forget about, but when they pop up as recommendations I’m so happy! I’m not employed my this company or have any friends or relatives who are, I just wanted to put out there that I’m able to keep a running list of what I’ve seen and finding others b/c of it! :)
Sometimes when I’m watching these old films it’s hard for me to grasp what a huge impact they had on the culture at the time. I watched Casablanca a few months back and while I really enjoyed it, I know that I didn’t fully understand it’s significance. Then, just two days ago on PBS there was a documentary about film producers, writers and actors from Europe (Germany specifically) who fled Europe because they were black listed and/or Jewish and/or their political view clashed with Hitler’s. The documentary shows a scene in the movie and the narrator points out each actor in the film who was a refugee from Europe and why they fled, what their political view were and what they did in European cinemas that made them ‘dangerous’ to the Third Reich. I thought about how powerful it must have felt for these actors’ to come together and all work on this film. It was fascinating, it helped me realize why this film had such an impact at the time (other than it being a great love story!). There are so many other that I want to comment on, but I’ve gone on enough for now!
