By the time I was 30, I had amassed a huge library. Then my father died and I had to dispose of his equally immense book collection. It made me realize the vanity of my collection. (Didn’t Solomon, the first book collector, despair of his collection saying “Vanity, vanity, all is vanity and mere chasing after the wind.”?) I have since culled and focused the books I have on my shelves. I have come to believe that there are books that should be read, but that frequently, these can be checked out of the library. There is a much much smaller list, I feel, of books I need to own. I will gladly buy a book if I want to support the particular press or the author or even the bookstore (if it’s a used bookstore, for instance.) To sum up: my bookshelves, my self.
