Finally!

Last weekend, the girlfriend and I stopped at Lowe’s and I bought a couple of 1×8 pine boards to use as shelving material. I had originally thought about some grand designs of having the bottom shelf larger and then making each shelf smaller as I went up. I decided after more than a year to just bag that plan and make some basic shelves. I was constantly getting annoyed at not being able to find things in the closet, so this lets me get things quite a bit more organized.

I still need to fasten the shelves on one end. The boards I bought were 4 feet long, and the space behind the closet door is about 25” deep. So the shelves are about an inch shorter than the space they’re spanning. They’re fastened down on two sides, but I need to buy some angle brackets and anchor them on the last end.

I’ve been organizing the closet for the past couple of hours, and I’m tremendously glad I finally got the thing done…

I stopped at Home Depot on the way home today and picked up some 1×2 pine boards to make the frame-type thing. I also picked up some wall anchors to make sure the screws don’t rip out of the wall. I need to measure the section of the closet I’m going to use and then cut the boards to the proper lengths. I think I got more wood than I actually need, but I’m going to use the rest to make the framework for my train layout. I think I’m going to make about five one-foot-high shelves. That should certainly hold most of my clothes, I think…

Tomorrow’s mission: Measure the closet and begin cutting the wood…

Too many clothes, too little room...

This is one of the goals I’ve serendipitously swiped from someone else’s list. The girlfriend and I were trying to pick up the holiday leftovers from the front of our respective closets, and I was also trying to put away my clothes folded clothes, which were sitting on top of the little wire drawer dresser thing I have in the closet. And both the girlfriend and I noticed that I have a whole lot more clothes now than I did when I moved down here. And I don’t have enough room for them all. The four-drawer wire basket thing I have doesn’t hold anywhere near all the clothes, and the girlfriend would actually like to have it back to use for her craft stuff. So, a set of shelves on the side seems like a good idea, and it shouldn’t be too terribly difficult to do. A good starter wood project, I think. And that’s my goal for the first week after the new year begins…
