Go camping more often.

Although not really success at this goal, my wife and I discussed buying an RV while we were driving home from the coast. I think we should get a pretty good tax return this year. We’re going to lose one deduction because the older stepson moved out, but we have a regular mortgage now, so we will gain a large deduction because of the interest we’ve paid on that. So, we’re going to take most or all of the tax refund and some money from our home equity line of credit and put that down on a new or lightly used RV, and then we should be able to go “camping” quite a bit more frequently, although it won’t necessarily be the kind of camping I used to do…

Okay, so I haven’t been camping for the past year and a half. That’s not good. I think I’m going to plan a trip that takes this goal and one of my new goals (Go to 2 places on my 43Things list) into account. I’m thinking maybe something like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. And go camping at one or both of them. Guess I’ll have to talk to the better half and see what she has to say about it…

Back in my college days, I used to go backpacking at least once a month, often more frequently. Now that I’ve become a fat, lazy, middle-aged slug, it seems like I only go out once a year or so when the in-laws do their week-long Labor Day campout. Of course, it doesn’t help that my wife doesn’t really like tent camping, but I can probably convince her to go at least a few times a year.
