George Orwell’s 1984 has been on my “been meaning to read” list for over 10 years. I finally finished it in Mexico a little over a week ago. Yay!

One more book and a book club
This morning I finished A Lesson Before Dying.
I’ve also joined a bookclub as part of my alma mater, Swarthmore College. The reading starts up in September and the theme for the year is “The City”. Prof. Heather Easterling ‘92, of Gonzaga University is designing the reading list. Swarthmore’s definitely intense, so this should be a rewarding club. Here’s the booklist for the year:- September: Invisible Cities – Italo Calvino
- October: selections from A Companion to the City, editors Gary Bridge and Sophie Watson
- November: Mrs. Dalloway – Virginia Woolf
- December/January: a pair of Renaissance “city” plays, such as Measure for Measure – Shakespeare and The Alchemist – Ben Jonson
- February: The House of Mirth – Edith Wharton
- March: The Trilogy of New York – Paul Auster
- April: Istanbul – Orhan Pamuk
- May: The Complete Tales of the City – Armistead Maupin
