I definitely have been listening more that I used to and continue to catch myself on occasions not listening, waiting for my turn to talk. The important thing is that I catch myself before I interrupt someone. I assume that this path will lead me to naturally wait for someone to finish their statements before I even think about responding. I’ll see.

with my job. Doing alcohol and other drug (AOD) assessments has allowed me to practice this on a daily basis. I’m definitely getting better. I caught myself yesterday completing someone’s sentence for them and I could hear the distain in their voice as they continued to talk as I was talking over them. It was really awkward, especially because it was one of my supervisors…

but I’ve been doing a better job of this and hope others are benefiting from this :)

I’ve been focusing on my reactions to people. Am I cutting them off? Waiting for my turn to talk?

and often have to cut people off when they get off the subject. I’ve gotten into the habit of cutting people off even when they’re “on” the subject, makes the assessment go much quicker… So today I really focused on letting people talk without interuption.

I have plenty of opportunities to practice this. I’ve employed it well with friends and family, well, doing better. It’s hard to REALLY listen, sometimes I’m just watching lips waiting for my turn to talk.
