#44 - The Founders of La Leche League - Dedicated to Healthy Breastfed Babies 11 months ago

Mary White
Edwina Hearn Froelich
Mary Ann Cahill
Betty Wagner Spandikow
Viola Brennan Lennon
Mary Ann Kerwin
Marian Leonard Tompson

In 1956, these seven women founded a group which became La Leche League International. At the time, only about 20% of U. S. women breastfed their babies. Information was scarce, and bottle-feeding was being promoted heavily. Thanks to their efforts, many millions of mothers have successfully breastfed their children with the support and encouragement of local LLL groups. The LLL book, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, has been through many editions, and continues to be a source of wisdom for new mothers.

La Leche League was founded to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal help, to all mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. While complementing the care of the physician and other health care professionals, it recognizes the unique importance of one mother helping another to perceive the needs of her child and to learn the best means of fulfilling those needs.
