I wonder if you “punished” your kids by making them copy out pages from the dictionary, like how people do with the Bible, if that would help them or hinder them? Would they hate words for the rest of their lives? Or would they thank you later, when they knew better?

Now I have to ask myself, which dictionary? Any? All? There are so many. I can’t spend my whole life reading dictionaries, because there are also a million other things I want to read.
I have started this project several times during the course of my life, copying out every entry by hand, and to tell the truth, I don’t think I’ve ever made it past the A’s, though I have learned many other words flipping randomly through the dictionary. And I have started the same task with a Scrabble dictionary as well, for what I assume to be obvious reasons (playing Scrabble). I also participated in spelling bees as a kid, so I had to learn lots of word-lists and go through the dictionary in conjunction with this task. But the WHOLE FRICKIN’ THING? No way, not yet. Still a dream…
